In brief
Choose A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) when an electric vehicle's battery, range, charging speed, and compatible chargers determine the route. Choose Ownway when the destination is known but the enjoyable stops are not: describe the food, coffee, viewpoints, timing, and detour preferences, let Ownway find and order suitable places, then navigate with Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze.
ABRP vs Ownway at a glance
| Dimension | A Better Routeplanner | Ownway |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Electric-vehicle routes shaped by energy and charging | Leisure drives where the right experience stops still need to be found |
| Starting point | EV model, battery state, destination, and charging preferences | A natural-language description of the drive and desired stops |
| Automatic stops | Charging stops required to complete the EV journey | Food, coffee, viewpoints, hotels, and attractions requested by intent |
| Route calculations | Range, charge behavior, charger speed, temperature, terrain, and other EV factors | Ordered stops plus overall time and distance trade-offs |
| Navigation | Driving mode and navigation; premium in-car integrations | Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze Companion |
| In-car support | CarPlay and Android Auto listed as Premium features | Uses the selected navigation app's in-car experience |
| Best question | Where must this EV charge, and for how long? | Where should we eat, pause, and explore along this drive? |
Choose ABRP when charging defines the route
A Better Routeplanner is built around the physics and infrastructure of electric driving. Its current App Store listing says the driver selects a vehicle model and destination, then receives a trip plan with charging stops and total duration.
ABRP can account for the vehicle's charging behavior and the conditions that influence consumption. Its official route-planning page describes factors such as accessories, temperature, and mountain passes. The result is a route designed to keep the EV within a workable energy plan, not merely a list of waypoints.
That makes ABRP the stronger choice when you need to know:
- which compatible chargers make the trip possible;
- how much battery should remain on arrival;
- how long charging is expected to take;
- whether weather, elevation, or vehicle configuration changes the plan;
- how the trip should be replanned as conditions change;
- which route alternative works best for the EV.
Ownway does not calculate energy consumption, charging curves, state of charge, or charger compatibility. It should not replace an EV-specific planner for a journey where reaching the next charger safely is the critical constraint.
Choose Ownway when the experiences define the stops
Ownway starts from a different uncertainty. You may know that the car can reach the destination, but not which restaurant, coffee shop, viewpoint, hotel, or attraction belongs along the way.
Describe the whole drive in one request:
Drive from Munich to Lake Garda, find excellent coffee after about two hours, add lunch with a mountain view, and include one short scenic stop without a large detour.
Ownway resolves those preferences into real places, orders the stops, and compares the planned itinerary with direct alternatives. The route can then be handed to Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze Companion.

If the battery plan is already handled and the missing part is what to do along the way, get Ownway on the App Store.
Both add stops automatically, but for different reasons
ABRP adds charging stops because the vehicle needs energy. It evaluates chargers in the context of the selected EV and the planned journey. ABRP's official Premium comparison also lists advanced charger filters, including amenities such as toilets and dog-friendly locations.
Ownway adds stops because the people in the car want a better trip. A request can combine the kind of place, approximate timing, quality preference, route position, and acceptable detour.
The distinction is simple:
- ABRP: “Find the charging plan that lets this EV complete the journey.”
- Ownway: “Find the meal, coffee, and scenic stops that make this journey worthwhile.”
A charger with a nearby restaurant can sometimes satisfy both needs, but the two planners optimize around different primary constraints.
Navigation and in-car use
ABRP can follow the plan in driving mode, update trip information, and replan during the journey. Its official Premium page lists turn-by-turn mobile navigation plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations among the available features.
Ownway remains the planning layer. It keeps the selected places and stop order, then relies on a dedicated maps app for live directions:
- Apple Maps and Google Maps receive supported multi-stop routes;
- Waze Companion moves through the itinerary one leg at a time;
- the saved Ownway route remains available for the complete plan.
Choose ABRP when energy-aware navigation should stay connected to the EV plan. Choose Ownway when you prefer your usual navigation app and need help deciding on the experience stops first.
A practical EV road-trip workflow
The apps can be complementary rather than interchangeable:
- Use ABRP to confirm the feasible EV route and required charging stops.
- Check where the longer charging sessions and natural breaks occur.
- Use Ownway for a driving segment where you want a particular meal, viewpoint, or attraction and the exact place is still unknown.
- Confirm that any added detour remains compatible with the EV's range and charging plan in ABRP.
- Navigate with the tool that should remain authoritative for that leg.
For a long or unfamiliar EV journey, ABRP should remain the source of truth for charging feasibility. Ownway can improve the human side of the trip without claiming to validate the battery plan.
Which planner should you choose?
- Choose ABRP if battery state, charging stops, charger speed, energy use, or EV-specific navigation determines whether the trip works.
- Choose Ownway if the route is feasible and you want to describe and discover meaningful leisure stops without researching every place first.
- Use both when ABRP protects the energy plan and Ownway helps shape the food, rest, and sightseeing experience around it.
For the wider market, compare the best route planner apps for road trips. If you already know every address, read the Google Maps multiple-stops guide. If your preferred navigator is Waze, see the Waze route planner alternatives.
